TYRE DETAILS

Tyre Pressure
Tyre Pressure levels are crucial not only to the longevity of your tyres, but to your personal safety when using your car. Cars with incorrect Tyre Pressure can be subject to decreased grip and increased braking distances. By using your car with incorrect tyre pressures, you are also increasing the likelihood of damaging your tyres and wheels. Most cars will have a different recommended tyre pressure level for the front tyres and the back tyres. AA Tyres are encouraging all their customers to pay particular attention to their tyre pressures in the run up the winter months.

Balancing
Correct wheel or tyre alignment is essential to good handling capability of your vehicle and plays an important role in tyre life. Misalignment and improper inflation are considered the two principal causes of premature tyre wear.
One of the easiest ways to tell when something is not right with your tyres is from behind the steering wheel. Vibration through the steering wheel can mean that a wheel is out of balance, this results in premature wearing of suspension and steering components, rotating parts and tyres. Tiny weights are used to counter balance the heaviest part of the tyre and wheel assembly. If these weights become loose, the wheel will wobble — more at higher speeds — which will increase tyre wear and is potentially unsafe in such a situation you should have your wheels balanced on a wheel balancing machine.

READING A TYRE SPECIFICATION
TYRE WIDTH (WIDTH / PROFILE R RIM SPEED RATING) This is the width of the tyre and is quoted in millimetres.
TYRE PROFILE (WIDTH / PROFILE R RIM SPEED RATING) The tyre profile is the depth of the tyre and is quoted as a percentage of the tyre width.
RIM SIZE (WIDTH / PROFILE R RIM SIZE SPEED RATING) This defines the diameter of the metal wheel which the tyre fits.

THE LAW ABOUT CAR TYRES
Car

You can find low-profile tyres on sports cars as well as vehicles with large diameter wheels.

Cadillac Escalade with optional 22-inch wheels. Sports cars will use the smaller sidewall height for handling performance reasons, while the Cadillac’s huge tires and short side wall allow a combined diameter that can still fit in the wheel wells. Low profile describes an especially short sidewall height, or aspect ratio, on a tyre. That’s the amount of rubber between the outside edge of the wheel or rim, and the road. Shorter sidewalls provide crisper handling and positive feedback to the steering wheel, but also give a rougher ride because of less cushioning between the rim and the road which sends each bump and road imperfection directly to the suspension.

Many people also like the looks of low-profile tyres.

All tyres have a size code, such as P245/45ZR17, on the sidewall that displays the tyres dimensions.

The aspect ratio is the number following the smaller one on the sidewall height.

ADVICE

Why Winter Tyres?

In many parts of mainland Europe it is common, or even a legal requirement, for drivers to keep two sets of wheels and tyres – a set of 'summer' tyres and a set of specialist 'winter' tyres.

Winter tyres use a tread rubber compound (high silica content) and tread pattern specifically designed to retain flexibility in low temperatures (below +7C) and give good braking/traction performance on snow/ice as well as on wet roads in cold conditions.

The sidewall of a winter tyre will be marked with a symbol showing a snowflake or snow-topped mountains.

Winter tyres are not really suited to all year round use though – summer tyres will give better performance when temperatures are higher and roads are typically drier – so you'll need two sets of tyres if you're going to choose specialist tyres for winter.

WHY IS 4X4 TYRE ROTATION IMPORTANT?

When carrying out tyre rotation on any four wheel drive vehicle, it’s important to match tread depth across all four tyres in order to avoid transmission wind up. This is where more stress than necessary is placed on certain tyres when turning, as all four wheels will travel different distances when turning. Transmission wind up tends to occur with four wheel drive vehicles when on unforgiving road surfaces, and you may notice this occurring when your tyres start to skip over the road’s surface, or if the steering becomes heavy.

This is the point at which major damage can occur. This may be to transmission components, axles and differentials, all of which can be incredibly expensive to replace.

HOW DO YOU ROTATE TYRES ON A 4X4?

In the case of 4x4 vehicles, tyre rotation works slightly differently. As four wheel drive vehicles are designed to see a more even distribution of weight throughout the vehicle and through all four tyres due to the central differential, your 4x4 vehicle will always handle better and grip the road better with four tyres that are of equal tread depth. So how should you rotate tyres on 4x4 vehicles? The recommended tyre rotation pattern for four wheel drive vehicles: Move the two front tyres to the back and switch sides, while the rear tyres move to the front of the vehicle and switch sides. This is to ensure that the tyres see even wear on the inner and outer parts of the tyre. Tyre rotation on your vehicle, whether four wheel drive or otherwise, should also be checked with the manufacturer where possible. This is because some manufacturers will recommend that the tyres with the least wear should be placed on the rear of the vehicle, as wearing rear tyres could mean an increased risk of the rear end of the vehicle slipping in wet conditions. Some mechanics will recommend that SUVs or vehicles that are part time four wheel drive will need the most regular tyre rotations, as this will help the modern electronic systems to work as intended.
